Counter-Strike Series: the history of CSGO
The Counter-Strike series has an interesting history that many people don't know about.
The first game of the series was released 18 years ago in 1999 and there have been many new games released after that. In this short article we are going to talk about the evolution & development of CS:GO.
The original Counter-Strike
The first game "Counter-Strike" was originally released as a Half-Life mod in March, 1999 but soon after that the developers (Minh Le, Jess Cliffe) and Valve teamed up and released the official standalone version in November, 2000. The game became very popular right away and it became an esports game with real prizes. That is one reason why the game has been so successful for a long time. Many people have set a goal for themselves to become the best in the game.
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
"Counter-Strike: Condition Zero" is the second game of the series that was released in March, 2004. There were multiple companies working on the game during the development which made it difficult and confusing for them. The game had lots of mixed reviews. It did not succeed commercially either. Good things people said about it were its new AI and new maps, but some of the things it was criticized was for example the long development time. It also got bad reviews for being out-of-date for its time. The graphics for example, were much worse than in other games in 2004.
The next development: Counter-Strike: Source
The next Counter-Strike released also in 2004 was called "Counter-Strike: Source" and it is the 2nd most successful game in the series. The game got very positive reviews all-around apart from some small criticism by the competitive community. It helped the next game in the series to become one of the most popular games in the world.

Where we are now: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
"Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" was released in 2012 and it has been at the top of the Steam lists from start. It uses a completely improved Source engine with greatly better graphics than the previous games. The game got mostly very positive reviews from everyone. It delivered good content for both casual and competitive gamers. It won the "eSports Game of the Year" award at The Game Awards 2015. Still today it has lots of competitive tournaments and it's a very popular esports game.
All of these games I have mentioned aren't the only ones in the game franchise; there are some other Counter-Strike titles you may have not heard about. "Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies" is a game released in 2014. It's similar to other Counter-Strike games but with zombies. "Counter-Strike Online" is a game targeted towards Asia's gaming market. It is the only Counter-Strike game with micropayments and it has a lot of different features from the main games.
The end of the Story (?)
The Counter-Strike series began from just a small mod and ended up being one of the most known, if not the most known, game in the world. The series had some worse years along the way, but eventually it "blew up" and got millions of fans. Even today it is still one of the most played game series' in the world.
